Karen Borders, President
Karen Borders has had a distinguished law enforcement career of over twenty-two years with a Southern California Police Agency. Ms. Borders is a highly respected and well-known law enforcement professional that has specialized expertise in the area of domestic violence, workplace violence, stalking, inappropriate pursuit, high profile investigations and many other areas of law enforcement. She served as a hostage negotiator on the special tactics response team. Ms. Borders served as the first female homicide detective within this agency. She was the originator of the first of its kind family services/domestic violence unit in the Coachella Valley. Ms. Borders is widely recognized for her efforts and commitment to victims of domestic violence, workplace violence and stalking. Ms. Borders has a degree in business management from University of Redlands. She has specialized training in the area of domestic violence, workplace violence prevention, stalking, inappropriate pursuit, public figure protection, and specialized investigations. Ms. Borders is a graduate of the Advanced Threat Assessment and Management Academy, and is a licensed Private Investigator in the state of California. Ms. Borders received numerous awards throughout her career. She was listed in the Marquis Who's Who of American Women for ten years consecutively (1995-2005). She received the Award of Valor twice (1988, 1994) and was Crafton Hills College's law enforcement officer of the year and has been recognized for her outstanding community service programs (2000). Ms. Borders is also an accomplished educator and speaker. She has taught countless hours for law enforcement officers, governmental officials, district attorneys, judicial officials and community groups and has been a featured speaker on several occasions in the areas of domestic violence, workplace violence, stalking and inappropriate pursuit. Ms. Borders served as the co-chair of the Coachella Valley domestic violence task force. She created and produced a thirty-minute domestic violence special that has aired on community cable. She co-hosted a community cable television show named "Crime Watch" which offered safety awareness information. Ms. Borders was co-creator of a domestic violence risk assessment program that is currently being used extensively in family law courts throughout Southern California. This program assists Judges, Commissioners, Attorneys, and Mental Health providers in determining risk levels to involved parties where serious domestic violence allegations are present. With Ms. Borders' expertise in domestic violence, she is considered a leading expert in handling these sensitive and often complex cases. Ms. Borders has been personally involved in several high profile criminal, civil and family law cases involving allegations of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse, stalking, kidnapping and other serious allegations. She has been involved in the successful threat assessment and management of hundreds of cases. This included interviewing thousands of victims, witnesses and suspects of violent acts. Additionally, she is a member of the Gavin de Becker Threat Assessment Practitioner Group, the leading threat assessment and management group in the United States. Her firm is also an active member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. Ms. Borders has testified in criminal, civil and family law proceedings, as an expert witness on the issues of domestic violence, threat assessment, safety, security and several law enforcement related issues. She has consulted for attorneys representing several California law enforcement agencies on issues of civil liability and criminal proceedings.
Ms. Borders has testified in Orange and Riverside Counties as a Domestic Violence Expert. She is currently the Domestic Violence Expert for the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Ms. Borders has taught several Southern California law enforcement agencies and community groups on the issues and topics surrounding Domestic Violence. Ms. Borders' dedication, commitment and compassion have led her to be the founding member of a domestic violence charitable organization. Ms. Borders donates her time and financial resources to several charities that assist domestic violence victims and their families. She is also an active member in her church.
John McLaughlin, CEO
John McLaughlin brings extensive law enforcement and private industry leadership experience to the firm. Mr. McLaughlin was a highly decorated police officer for a Southern California police agency for nearly 15 years. He has over 2500 hours of specialized training in domestic violence investigations, stalking and inappropriate pursuit, workplace violence prevention, computer technology, and many other areas of law enforcement. Mr. McLaughlin has established himself as an effective leader within the business community. Having owned and operated private businesses, Mr. McLaughlin demonstrated his leadership skills in dealing with issues that face corporate America daily.
Mr. McLaughlin has significant specialized training in the areas of domestic violence, workplace violence, stalking, inappropriate pursuit, public figure protection, and specialized investigations. He is a graduate of the Threat Assessment and Management Academy and attended the Advance Threat Assessment and Management Academy in 2001. He has attended training provided by Central Intelligent Agency experts on truthfulness recognition. Mr. McLaughlin received specialized training from Dr. James McGee and Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Dave Grossman, Ph.D., both leading psychologists on the issues of threat assessment. He participated in specialized training conducted by Dr. Raymond Zilinskas, Senior Scientist, Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The training was entitled: “Thwarting Biocriminality by Improving Decision-making: Progressing from Threat Assessment to Risk Assessment.” This training also included weapons of mass destructions, and biological and chemical weapons. Mr. McLaughlin has received various awards and recognition in both his law enforcement career and his private business career. These awards have been for the commitment, leadership and dedication he has shown throughout his professional life. The Orange County District Attorneys Office recognized Mr. McLaughlin for his ability, professionalism, sensitivity and compassion in dealing with victims of domestic violence in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He has received several awards for his leadership during his private business endeavors. These awards include: a business leadership of the year award in 2000, marketing excellence awards in 1999 and 2000, and a prestigious award for obtaining a 99.5% client satisfaction rating for five consecutive years (1997-2001). Mr. McLaughlin was co-creator of a domestic violence risk assessment program that is currently being used in family law courts throughout Southern California. This program assists Judges, Commissioners, Attorneys, and Mental Health providers in determining risk levels to involved parties where serious domestic violence allegations are present. With Mr. McLaughlin’s expertise in domestic violence, he is recognized as a valuable tool in these difficult and potentially lethal cases. Mr. McLaughlin has authored several articles on domestic violence, stalking, and teen dating violence. He has also provided continuing education for attorney’s specializing in family law matters, along with law enforcement officers on the issues of domestic violence, stalking, and proper investigation techniques. Mr. McLaughlin has been personally involved in several high profile criminal, civil and family law cases involving allegations of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse, stalking, kidnapping, and other serious allegations.
